North East India has no single best season. The plains of Assam, the hills of Meghalaya and the Himalayan valleys of Arunachal and Sikkim each follow a different rhythm. Here is a simple way to plan.
October to March: the safe choice
Cool, dry and clear weather makes this the most popular window for the whole region. It suits Assam (Kaziranga, Majuli, Sivasagar), Nagaland and Manipur. Nights get cold in the hills, so pack layers. December brings the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland, so book early if you plan to attend.
March to May: flowers and long days
Spring is excellent in Sikkim, where rhododendrons bloom, and in Arunachal Pradesh. Hill stations such as Shillong and Gangtok are pleasant, while the Assam plains start to warm up. Mid-April is Bohag Bihu, Assam's spring festival, so expect cultural events and busier hotels.
June to September: monsoon
This is the wet season. Meghalaya is at its most dramatic, with huge waterfalls around Cherrapunji, but heavy rain can cause landslides and slow roads. Kaziranga's park is generally closed for the monsoon and rivers flood parts of Assam. Go for waterfalls and green landscapes, and keep your plan flexible.
