Overview
Sikkim's mountain capital
Gangtok climbs a steep ridge in the Eastern Himalaya, its streets thick with prayer flags and its skyline framed — on a clear day — by Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak. It's a relaxed, walkable capital: MG Road is pedestrian-only and lined with cafés, and the town is dotted with monasteries, from the busy Enchey Monastery in town to the much larger Rumtek a short drive away.
Gangtok is also the launchpad for Sikkim's high-altitude side — Tsomgo (Changu) Lake and the Nathula Pass on the old Silk Route to Tibet, both a couple of hours up the mountain from town.
Best time to visit
March to June brings rhododendrons in bloom and clear mountain views, while October to December is crisp and dry with the best visibility of Kangchenjunga. The monsoon (July–September) brings heavy rain and the risk of landslides on the mountain roads.
Things to do
- Visit Rumtek Monastery, one of the largest and most important in Sikkim
- Ride the cable car over central Gangtok
- Day-trip to Tsomgo Lake and, permits permitting, the Nathula Pass
- Walk MG Road's cafés and handicraft shops in the evening
- Visit the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology for Himalayan Buddhist art
Getting there
Gangtok is about 125 km from Bagdogra, the nearest major airport (roughly 4–5 hours by road), or a shorter drive from Sikkim's own Pakyong airport. Both connect to Kolkata and Delhi.
