Kaziranga National Park in Assam is home to the world's largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros. It is also a good place to see wild elephants, swamp deer, water buffalo and many birds.
When to go
The park is usually open from about November to April. It closes for the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra floods the grassland. Winter mornings are cool and misty, which is good for wildlife but needs warm clothes.
The safari zones
- Central (Kohora): the most popular zone and the easiest to reach.
- Western (Bagori): known for rhinos and birdlife.
- Eastern (Agoratoli): quieter, with good birding.
Zone availability and timings are set by the park authorities, so check before you travel.
Jeep and elephant safaris
Jeep safaris run in the morning and afternoon. Elephant-back safaris are short, early morning rides in some zones. Slots can sell out in peak winter, so plan your stay first and book safari slots as early as the official system allows.
Getting there and where to stay
Kaziranga is about 200 km (roughly 5 hours) from Guwahati, and not far from Jorhat airport. Many visitors combine it with Majuli and Sivasagar. Browse hotels and homestays near Kaziranga and book with a small advance.
