Overview
The old Ahom capital
For nearly 600 years the Ahom dynasty ruled Assam from around Sivasagar, and the town still holds some of their finest monuments. Rang Ghar, built in the 1740s as a royal sports pavilion, is often called Asia's oldest surviving amphitheatre — its double-curved roof shaped like an upturned royal boat is one of the most photographed structures in Assam.
A short drive away, Talatal Ghar is a seven-storeyed palace with secret underground tunnels, while the Sivasagar tank — a vast, hand-dug reservoir — is ringed by the Shivadol, Vishnudol and Devidol temples, their gold-plated spires catching the evening light.
Best time to visit
October to March is best, with cool, clear weather for walking between the historic sites. Summers get hot and humid, and the monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain across the Brahmaputra valley.
